A quality driver converts incoming electricity into stable current. When that conversion is poorly controlled, the light output may fluctuate. A higher number indicates stronger overall color fidelity, but CRI alone does not describe brightness, color temperature or lighting efficiency.

Is CRI 80 Good Enough?

CRI 80 LED lights are suitable for many façades, pathways, gardens and public spaces. They provide recognizable colors while maintaining a practical balance between luminous efficiency, product cost and visual quality.

Projects that mainly require safe movement or broad exterior illumination may not benefit significantly from specifying CRI 95. Optics, glare control and uniformity may have a greater influence on the final result.

When Should CRI 90 Be Used?

CRI 90 or above is valuable when lighting must reveal the natural character of materials. It can improve the appearance of stone, brick, wood, plants and decorative finishes.

Higher CRI should be considered for:

Why R9 Performance Matters

General CRI is commonly calculated as the average of several color samples. Saturated red is not strongly represented in that average, so two products with the same CRI can reproduce red tones differently.

The R9 value is useful for evaluating warm colors, skin tones, brick, wood and selected plants. Where these colors are important, buyers should request both Ra and R9 data rather than checking only the main CRI number.

CRI and CCT Must Work Together

CRI measures color rendering, while correlated color temperature describes whether white light appears warm or cool. A 3000K product and a 4000K product can both have CRI 90, but they will create different atmospheres.

Color consistency also matters. Fixtures with high CRI may still look mismatched if their CCT and SDCM tolerances are not controlled across the order.

Balance Quality With Efficiency

High-CRI LEDs can have slightly lower luminous efficacy than standard alternatives. The lighting design should balance color quality, lumen output, wattage and quantity instead of treating the highest CRI as the only goal.

Waterproof LED lights carrying either rating are completely protected against dust according to the first digit. IP67 versus IP68 lighting should be evaluated according to actual exposure rather than assuming that the higher number is necessary for every outdoor fixture.

What Does IP67 Mean?

The number 6 confirms complete protection against dust entering the enclosure. The number 7 indicates protection against temporary immersion in water under standardized conditions.

IP67 may be suitable for fixtures exposed to heavy rain, temporary flooding or occasional immersion. It is commonly considered for some underground lights, deck lights and exterior products, provided that the installation includes effective drainage.

An IP67 fixture should not automatically be specified for permanent underwater operation.

What Does IP68 Mean?

The number 8 indicates protection against continuous immersion. However, the applicable depth and duration are agreed between the manufacturer and customer and should be more demanding than the IP67 test conditions.

This means two IP68 products may have different approved operating depths. Buyers should ask for:

  • Maximum installation depth

  • Test duration and pressure

  • Permitted water temperature

  • Cable-entry test conditions

  • Intended continuous operating environment

An IP68 marking without these details provides incomplete information for an underwater project.

Which Rating Fits Each Application?

Wall lights, bollards and wall washers usually use IP65 or IP66 because they face rain and water jets rather than immersion. Deck and underground fixtures may require IP67 or IP68 depending on drainage and the risk of standing water.

Why IP Rating Is Not Enough

Higher illuminance is not always better. Excessive output can create strong contrast between the path and surrounding areas, making it harder for the eyes to adapt.

CCT controls the perceived warmth or coolness of white light. Measured in kelvin, correlated color temperature does not change the physical temperature of a fixture. Instead, it describes whether the light appears amber, warm white, neutral white or cool white. This characteristic has a direct influence on atmosphere, visual clarity and the appearance of illuminated materials.

CCT Changes the Emotional Character

Lower values such as 2200K to 3000K create warmer light. These tones are often associated with comfort, relaxation and hospitality. They complement brick, wood, sandstone and traditional architectural finishes.

Values around 3500K to 4000K create a more neutral appearance. Neutral white can support commercial façades, public spaces and contemporary architecture without appearing strongly yellow or blue.
