How Long Do Underwater Lights Last

LED Underwater Lights can provide many years of service when their housing, seals, thermal design and electrical system are suited to continuous immersion. LED sources are frequently rated around 50,000 operating hours, but this figure does not guarantee that the complete fixture will last for the same period. Water ingress, corrosion, excessive heat and unstable power can shorten actual service life.

Rated Life and Real Service Life

A rated LED life commonly refers to lumen maintenance. A designation such as L70 at 50,000 hours means the LED is expected to retain about 70 percent of its initial output at the stated operating point. It does not mean that every component will suddenly fail after 50,000 hours.

The underwater LED light lifespan also depends on the driver, cable entry, seals, circuit board and housing. A fixture may contain a long-life LED chip but still fail early when moisture reaches the electronics.

Five Factors That Affect Longevity

1. Waterproof Sealing

Permanent submersion normally requires IP68 protection. The tested depth and duration should match the Installation conditions. Silicone gaskets, tempered glass and cable glands must maintain even sealing pressure throughout repeated heating and cooling cycles.

2. Housing Material

Grade 304 stainless steel is suitable for many freshwater environments. Grade 316 or 316L provides stronger resistance to chlorides and is generally preferred for swimming pools, coastal areas and more corrosive water conditions.

3. Heat Dissipation

Water surrounding the fixture can assist cooling, but the internal heat still needs to move efficiently from the LED board to the housing. Poor thermal contact accelerates lumen depreciation and may damage electronic components.

4. Power Quality

Voltage that is too high, unstable or incompatible with the fixture can reduce LED and driver life. DC 12V and DC 24V systems require correctly sized power supplies, appropriate cable sections and voltage-drop calculations.

5. Water Chemistry

Chlorine concentration, salinity, pH and cleaning chemicals influence corrosion and sealing materials. The manufacturer should know the water conditions before confirming the housing grade and installation accessories.

Maintenance Extends Operating Life

Inspect the fixture glass, fasteners and cable connections periodically. Mineral deposits and algae should be removed because they reduce light output and may trap contaminants around the housing. Maintenance teams should avoid opening a sealed unit underwater or in a humid environment.

Long underwater service is achieved by protecting the entire lighting system rather than focusing only on the LED chip rating. Correct material selection, stable power and regular inspection give the fixture the best chance of approaching its designed operating life.
