Why Do LED Lights Flicker

LED lights flicker when the electrical current reaching the LEDs changes rapidly or becomes unstable. Some flicker is immediately visible, while higher-frequency fluctuations may be difficult to notice without a camera or measuring instrument. Common causes include incompatible drivers, unstable power, poor Dimming control, loose wiring and overloaded circuits.

How LED Flicker Happens

LEDs respond to changes in current almost instantly. Unlike traditional light sources that may retain heat and continue glowing briefly, an LED can increase or decrease output as soon as its electrical supply changes.

A quality driver converts incoming electricity into stable current. When that conversion is poorly controlled, the light output may fluctuate. Pulse-width modulation can also switch LEDs on and off rapidly during dimming. Properly designed systems use a frequency and control method that minimizes visible disturbance.

Common Causes of Flickering

Driver Problems

A low-quality, damaged or overheated driver may fail to regulate current consistently. Driver specifications must match the LED load, voltage and control method.

Incompatible Dimmers

Not every LED driver works with every dimmer. Combining phase-cut, 0–10V, DALI or PWM components without checking compatibility can cause flickering, limited dimming range or sudden shutdown.

Voltage Fluctuation

Unstable mains power, undersized transformers and long low-voltage cables can produce fluctuating input. Voltage drop is especially relevant in 12V landscape systems containing many fixtures.

Loose Connections

Poor cable joints, damaged connectors or loose terminals can interrupt power. Outdoor moisture and corrosion may gradually weaken electrical contact.

Excessive Circuit Load

A power supply operating near or above its rated capacity can become unstable. Appropriate spare capacity should be included when calculating the system load.

Why Flicker Matters Outdoors

Flicker can reduce visual comfort and make moving objects appear unstable. It may also become visible in photographs and videos of façades, fountains or landscape installations.

Dynamic RGB and RGBW systems require particular attention because low control frequencies can produce bands or irregular colors on camera. Lighting used for hotels, commercial plazas and media façades should be evaluated under expected filming conditions.

How Buyers Can Reduce Flicker Risk

Request driver compatibility information, flicker test data and the intended dimming range. Confirm that the power supply has sufficient capacity and that cable size is appropriate for the circuit distance.
